Tissue paper is a material with very specific physical properties that make it ideal for use in hygiene and household products. Among these properties, water absorption capacity stands out as one of the most critical, as it determines the paper’s effectiveness in real-life usage.
To measure this property in a standardized way, there is the international standard ISO 12625-8, which defines the basket-immersion test method. This test allows for the determination of two key parameters:
- Water absorption time (in seconds), i.e., how long it takes for the paper to become completely wetted.
- Water absorption capacity (g/g), the amount of water absorbed per gram of sample.
How is this test performed?
The standard specifies the test conditions in detail:
- Sample size: 76 mm in width and sufficient length to weigh between 5.0 ± 0.2 g.
- Metal basket: with a mass of 3.0 ± 0.1 g.
- Immersion: the sample is immersed for 30 ± 1 seconds in deionized water.
- Draining: the basket is then tilted at a 30 ± 3° angle for 60 ± 1 seconds.
- Finally, the wet weight of the sample is recorded to calculate absorption.
